本課程與各高校大學(xué)英語課堂教學(xué)《綜合英語》課程并行，以《綜合英語》中出現(xiàn)的重難點(diǎn)詞匯短語為線索來組織課程內(nèi)容。針對學(xué)生英語詞匯學(xué)習(xí)的困難，例如記憶時(shí)效短、使用中容易出錯、一詞多義時(shí)無法確定詞義的選擇、記單詞太枯燥、太難于堅(jiān)持等等困難，本課程從每單元精選重難點(diǎn)詞匯短語，以此為綱，從語義學(xué)、構(gòu)詞學(xué)、語言學(xué)、跨文化交際等方方面面來講解詞匯，使學(xué)生在探究英語詞匯短語奧妙的過程中，切實(shí)理解單詞的意義，了解單詞的文化內(nèi)涵，把握單詞的運(yùn)用場景，掌握單詞的記憶方法，真正提高學(xué)習(xí)者學(xué)習(xí)英語的興趣，以期達(dá)到學(xué)生自覺學(xué)習(xí)和可持續(xù)學(xué)習(xí)的目的。

一、神秘的英語單詞  mysterious English words

單詞背后的故事：

Why should one never marry a tennis player?

 --Because love means nothing to them.   

 œuf [œf]  > 法語，蛋，雞蛋； 法語有冠詞le, la; 加在元音前省略為l’, 故雞蛋為l’œuf [lœf]   > 讀音極像love。

網(wǎng)球賽中比分零念為love,其實(shí)是l’œuf， 后訛傳為love.

使用場合

fat chance = slim chance     little or no chance  沒有機(jī)會，沒有可能

但是，它們真的一樣么？slim chance （幾乎）沒有機(jī)會，一絲機(jī)會

There‘s only a slim chance that we can win.    我們贏的機(jī)會微乎其微。

Even though I don’t study, there is still a slim chance for me to pass the  

examination.      即使我沒有學(xué)習(xí)，仍有一線希望通過考試的。

而fat chance 本應(yīng)該表示機(jī)會很大，然而，它總是出現(xiàn)于諷刺場合，表示夸

張的諷刺，即：不可能，想得美，做夢吧！

You think you can win the lottery? Fat Chance.  想中彩票？做夢吧(不可能)!

二者盡管最終意思很近，但是情感上完全不一樣，使用場合也截然不同。同

樣的用法還有： a fat lot :  very little or none at all   幾乎沒有
