麥格勒爾教授是牛津大學(xué)哲學(xué)博士，師從現(xiàn)代著名的分析哲學(xué)家和倫理學(xué)家艾耶爾。畢業(yè)后一直在美國德威大學(xué)工作，德威大學(xué)是美國著名的私立大學(xué)之一，是美國進(jìn)入前五十位
的最好本科學(xué)校之一。麥格勒爾教授長(zhǎng)期從事哲學(xué)倫理學(xué)和價(jià)值論的研究，是國際著名的《價(jià)值探求》雜志的主編，美國國際價(jià)值哲學(xué)學(xué)會(huì)的組織者和前任會(huì)長(zhǎng)，長(zhǎng)期活躍在倫理學(xué)和國際價(jià)值哲學(xué)領(lǐng)域，已經(jīng)主持召開了一年一屆的價(jià)值哲學(xué)國際會(huì)議近三十屆。發(fā)表過論著多部，近年來他對(duì)中國哲學(xué)界關(guān)注較多，尤其熱愛中國，愿與中國學(xué)者交往。

This course will provide an introduction to thoughts of some ancient philosophers that form the philosophical foundations of ethics in the West. We will consider Plato’s account of justice for the individual, Aristotle’s understanding of virtue, the Stoic condemnation of emotion, and the Epicurean promotion of pleasure. Some attention will be given to the historical context in which the thoughts emerged, but our primary focus will be on philosophical issues that arise from conceptual exploration. As we consider the thoughts of Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and the Epicureans, we will reflect on the nature of goodness, instrumental and inherent value, free will, and the problem of evil. No previous courses in philosophy are required.
